In the course of Autumn 2009, 30 nordic restaurants were nominated for The Nordic Prize – Restaurant of the Year in the Nordic region.
The winner of the first Nordic prize was announced at the Søllerød Kro restaurant in Holte, Denmark, on January 17, 2010, by a jury of five, one from each Nordic country.
Noma, which is an abbreviation of the Danish for Nordic food, has been one of the most succesful restaurants in the world in recent years. Run by head chef and partner René Redzepi, who actively promotes Nordic cuisine, both at Noma and in his capacity as an ambassador for the Nordic Council of Ministers’ programme New Nordic Food, which promotes Nordic food culture and gastronomy as well as design and tourism associated with food. The programme drew to a close at the end of last year but received a new mandate until 2014.
3rd best in the world
The Noma restaurant has two Michelin stars and previous awards include being named the 3rd best restaurant in the world. In the “S. Pellegrino World’s 50 Best Restaurants” review it reads:

Noma is a homage to soil and sea, a reminder of the source of our food. Take his starter of crunchy baby carrots from the fertile Lammefjorden region of Denmark, served with edible “soil” made from malt, hazelnuts and beer, with a cream herb emulsion beneath – you are literally eating the earth!

Noma at the boiling point – the documentary film
In May 2008 Danish Television (DR1) followed life in the kitchen of Noma. When Rene Redzepi and his team of chefs create gastronomic art, it happens very often in a shockingly harsh tone. “It’s like in the military, but this time it’s not some jerk shouting at me,” says chef trainee Robert Petersen.
We are present at nude bathing at the Noma summer party and experience the day when Noma reached the absolute boiling point – it was the day the lamb was sliced the wrong way. It’s the first time a television crew got unlimited access to Noma, and it resulted in a fascinating and honest portrayal of a man chasing perfection night after night. Watch the documentary.
